The Port of Maputo last year moved record volumes, handling a total of 32-million tons – a 3.4% increase compared with the previous year’s 30.9-million tons.

The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) says its direct operations also reached a new record last year, at 15.2- million tons, corresponding to 6.4% growth year-on-year.

Rail volumes increased by 17%, rising from 9.7-million tons in 2024, to 11.7-million tons in 2025.

The MPDC says this all-time-high performance reinforces the Mozambican port’s position as a key regional logistics hub, while it also reflects the resilience and efficiency of the integrated port and corridor system.

“These results reflect the collective effort of our teams and partners across the entire logistics chain,” notes MPDC CEO Osório Lucas.

“Achieving record volumes while continuing to invest in capacity, efficiency and social impact demonstrates the maturity and resilience of the Port of Maputo.

“Our focus remains on building a competitive, integrated and sustainable corridor that supports Mozambique’s long-term economic development.”

The Port of Maputo is currently the subject of a number of strategic infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Kanyaka island pier bridge, scheduled for completion in March.

This project should substantially improve access, mobility and logistical integration for the island community.

The investment programme to increase capacity and improve the logistics system at the port also includes the expansion of the bulk terminal to 16-million tons; the ongoing expansion of the DP World container terminal to 530 000 TEUs; the capacity expansion at Grindrod’s magnetite and coal terminal to 12-million tons; and the progressive improvement of the entire logistics corridor through interventions at key nodes such as Km4, Kudumba and TRAC.
